In response to a constituent demanding at least a 50% reduction of the Las Cruces police department budget, Vasquez responded, “I wholeheartedly and absolutely support police reform…You can count on my support.”
CLAIM: Gabe Vasquez supported defunding the police and using the money for social programs.
In response to an email from a constituent that called for “defunding the police department and moving those funds to strengthening social programs,” Vasquez responded, “Thank you…and I agree.”
CLAIM: Gabe Vasquez attacked police, calling them “systems of oppression.”
In 2020, Vasquez Tweeted that the U.S. needs to “deconstruct and rebuild the systems of oppression that keep black people in perpetual harm,” such as law enforcement, the economy, and wealth inequality.
That same year, Vasquez called for a “fundamental power shift” to topple those, particularly white men, who preside over the “racism, killing & injustice.”
Previously, in 2019, Vasquez called the “Thin Blue Line” a tool of racist propaganda.
